UK drivers navigating busy urban streets are facing renewed warnings regarding the correct use of mini roundabouts, as traffic authorities stress that improper navigation can lead to severe legal penalties.
The distinctive road features, designed to optimize traffic flow and slow down vehicles in built-up areas, often catch motorists off guard due to their flat, painted central white circles.

SubscribeMany drivers mistakenly assume that these smaller junctions allow cars to drive straight over the center, failing to realize that doing so constitutes a direct violation of UK traffic regulations.
According to the Highway Code, motorists must treat mini roundabouts with the exact same protocol applied to traditional, full-sized roundabouts rather than treating painted markers as optional road art.
Highway Code Rules And Exceptions For Large Vehicles
Rule 188 of the Highway Code explicitly mandates that all vehicles must pass entirely around the central markings when approaching these compact junctions across the road network.
Auto Express head of digital content Steve Walker explained that flat central markings are intentionally designed to accommodate large vehicles like buses and HGVs that cannot physically circulate around them.
"According to the Highway Code, mini-roundabouts should be treated in the same way as conventional roundabouts, meaning motorists have to circulate them in the usual fashion," said Walker.
Motorists caught by law enforcement driving straight through the center of these roundabouts instead of going around them risk facing hefty fines and official prosecution.
